Thoughts On 2020

We all entered 2020 with new dreams and new hope. It is a new year and a new decade. But no one would have guessed that 2020 would be filled with unexpected turns that forced us to change or cancel so many of our plans for the year.

It wasn’t until February that we started getting more information on Covid-19. Here in this beautiful city of Singapore, we only felt the full impact of the virus when it started spreading among migrant workers living in dormitories. Following the high number of positive cases, the government imposed the Circuit Breaker, which is basically a lock-down. Our lives were not the same again after that.

New Norm

Whipping out our phones with the camera ready to scan the SafeEntry QR code and having our temperatures taken before we enter almost every establishment has become habitual to us. These precautionary measures have been in place so long that I can’t even recall what it’s like to just walk into a place without them.

It was recently announced that we will soon be entering into Phase 3 of the Circuit Breaker. However, this only means that we will need to adapt to amended (less strict) precautionary measures. Returning entirely to pre-covid times still seems far-fetched at this moment.

Many industries have been hit – thanks to travel bans, dining restrictions, major closures, cancellations of large-scale events, and more. In order to survive and thrive, we must adapt and adjust to a new way of living.

New Life

In the midst of the pandemic, we have given birth to a new life. It is an incredible feeling. We never understand life until it grows inside of you. No other feeling in this world is equivalent to feeling life inside of you. And then when it comes into the full term of completion, it gives birth to a new life.

I am thankful for this new life that has brought much joy and laughter to the family. With the new addition to the family, it also means new responsibility, to be a better father, a better son, and a better coach and consultant.

While it has been a difficult year for most of us, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

We have two choices: to face difficulty with optimism or to face difficulty with pessimism. Personally, I’m choosing the optimistic route, to look at the best opportunities in every situation.
